North Park Baptist Church in Grand Rapids, Michigan is where I call home. The newest sermon series will be titled: “Strength and Courage!” The passage is Joshua 1:9 (one passage that I hold dear to my heart in particular). I have quoted the passage from the Message bible. It is a translation that is interesting to reference from time to time.

“After the death of Moses the servant of God, God spoke to Joshua, Moses’ assistant:

‘Moses my servant is dead. Get going. Cross this Jordan River, you and all the people. Cross to the country I’m giving to the People of Israel. I’m giving you every square inch of the land you set your foot on—just as I promised Moses. From the wilderness and this Lebanon east to the Great River, the Euphrates River—all the Hittite country—and then west to the Great Sea. It’s all yours. All your life, no one will be able to hold out against you. In the same way I was with Moses, I’ll be with you. I won’t give up on you; I won’t leave you. Strength! Courage! You are going to lead this people to inherit the land that I promised to give their ancestors. Give it everything you have, heart and soul. Make sure you carry out The Revelation that Moses commanded you, every bit of it. Don’t get off track, either left or right, so as to make sure you get to where you’re going. And don’t for a minute let this Book of The Revelation be out of mind. Ponder and meditate on it day and night, making sure you practice everything written in it. Then you’ll get where you’re going; then you’ll succeed. Haven’t I commanded you? Strength! Courage! Don’t be timid; don’t get discouraged. God, your God, is with you every step you take.'”

I spoke to my pastor and he explained that it will be a three part series. The series is called “Strength and Courage” from Joshua 1:1-9. The basis of it is that God commands Israel and us to be strong and courageous in living for him…but how do we do that? What is our resource for this strength and courage. The text give us three reason that form the three parts of the series on how we can be strong and courageous…

1. Because God uses his servants…it doesn’t matter whether it is Moses, Joshua or me and you. If we are simply servants, doing God’s will and relying on him, then God will use us.

2. Because God keeps his promises…He made promises to Abraham and  Israel and fulfilled every one and he will do the same for us.

3. Because God honors obedience…Joshua and Israel were to know the Book of the Law so they could be faithful to the covenant God had made with them. If they would simply obey God, he would bring them the success that he had promised. As Christians under the new covenant, obedience to his Word is still key.

So that’s the general idea. I will be sure to update this post and attach the podcasts for each message.

Stay sweet!
